Tayrien Tapes

In the beginning

Guy used a Tascam DA-P1 to record.    It's a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) machine the quit making over a decade ago.    He also left behind a shoebox of about a dozen two hour tapes.    While he was quite a meticulous note keeper, most of the tapes had no notes.

January 20, 2020   Major progress.   I installed Reaper and with some clues, got it to record You-Tubes.   The package will record in 1 hour chunks and automatically start a new chunk.   Good thing I've plenty of disk space.

January 21, 2020   Major progress.   I was able to get the DA-P1 to connect with my Motu Traveller Mk3 which I hadn't used in over a decade through the S/PIF connection.   This (to me) assured I got the cleanest source of data.

01-200121_1911.wav

I recorded the first tape.   He made zilcho in the way of notes of what this tape is.   I believe he recorded a practice session for self examination purposes.   So many songs I don't recognize.

At the 34 minute mark - Appears he took a break lowered the signal about 12 db (?).   I believe when he gets all the way through a song, he has a "twang" that he ends with - Not all songs were played through to the end.

1:56 new song

 - 1:59 end Good take off and landing - tape finished

Also noticing the rewind appears a bit balky...   Keep an eye on this.   Perhaps this is why he boxed up the player?  That and he may have already thought he had his good material captured?

Knowing a bit now how Guy plays, I will start listening and noting the times I hear good "endings" - Listening to the entire song, crash landings and all is a be fatiguing...

01-200129 Practice session
Recording this and will review later
No notes

01-200131 Practice session with Felton on flute
This tape is labeled as "#2"
Seems like they used a single room mic, mainly on guitar.
Around the 51 minute mark, the signal drops waaaaaay low.
- Will likely record this a second time with gain provided - this will introduce noise.
- I had earlier given Guy a condenser mic which was still set up in the mic stand.   I also spotted where he had attempted a repair on a mic XLR cable.   I think this had something to do with this low level recording.

End time 26:00, new session. Audio now at 33 cre

01-200211 Session Tape
Some notes with this one - Not totally sure what this all means yet.
